Well the 9th draft is in the books and it was an interesting one. Due to moving back to Fredericton and increased numbers, a decision was made to expand the league to 10 teams. This meant the draft only contained 7 rounds, making each pick that much more important. Also, for the first time ever, the drafts picks were updated online and the secret vault was not used during this season’s draft.
There was an unlikely captain who set a new record for lowest draft pick at 10th. Unlikely in respect to previous experience. Rick Bartlett was drafting a team for the 8th time and had never picked below 2nd, which he did twice. The other 5 times he got the first pick, including 3 consecutive seasons. He’s beat 4 to 1 odds twice, 6-1 odds twice, and 8 to 1 odds once, but couldn’t beat 10 to 1 odds. As a matter of fact, ironically ended up with the last pick. If you add his previous picks together (1, 2, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2) they equal 9 . He just added 10 with the 10th pick this season.
Jamie Carson, who did get this season’s number one draft pick used it to grab Marc Guitard. Marc becomes the 6th player to be picked first overall. The previous number one picks were Clay Bouzane (3 times), Mark Cress (twice), Fred McAloon, Grant Donovan, and Jim Taylor.
