Congratulations to the Flying Elbows in winning the 2015 FBHL Championship!
The Elbows upended the Sasquatches two games to none to win a fast paced championship series. The first game was an exceptionally well played game with the Sasquatches jumping out first, the ever present Bobby Woods snipe from Marc Guitard at the five minute mark. Three minutes later, a Vince MacDonald slapper tied the game on a great up the left side pass from Brian Kelly. That goal really lifted the Elbows with it resulting in a lead shortly thereafter on a goal by Troy Doyle, with Captain O’Leary assisting. As they have all season, the Sasquatches found the answer in a tying goal with four minutes remaining by their dynamic duo of Woods & Guitard, a Bobby goal with Marc assisting. The remaining four minutes of this game was unbelievable action, both goalies making big stops and loving their goalposts. The overtime was as expected, fast and furious. Both teams had a few chances with the goalies denying all attempts, until Troy deftly intercepted a clearing attempt and his shot at the two minute mark was the O.T. winner! Brandon (and his goalposts) accounted for many key stops that made this win possible for the Flying Elbows.
Consensus from those in attendance was emphatic agreement that game one was the most well played game of the entire season and playoffs. On the topic of attending today’s game, shame on anyone who could not make it out to witness the fantastic effort put forth by both clubs.
Game two had the Sasquatches jumping out in front early with two quick goals. The first one by Darren Wilkins 30 seconds in followed by Captain Guitard at the three minute mark. The Sasquatches were playing inspired hockey and looked to be in the driver’s seat until Troy Doyle found his game two groove, popping two goals two minutes apart to tie the score and giving him a total of four championship series goals, leading all scorers. Momentum had changed drastically in those two minutes , and a follow up goal by Jamie Williams was enough for Sasquatch’s Captain Guitard to call a time out to regroup his squad. However, the Elbows had “caught fire and were smoking” but more aptly, they begain living up to their name, they were Flying. Jamie’s goal turned out to be the first of three in 90 seconds for the Flying Elbows. A Brian Kelly goal proved to be the eventual game winner and that was followed by a Captain O’Leary insurance maker. Bobby Woods would score the last Sasquatch goal (his 3rd of the day) with 7:45 remaining, followed by Elbow’s goals from Vince MacDonald and Travis Muxworthy, which meant every Elbow scored a goal in the clinching game of the championship!
I’d like to thank the goal judges Phil Cronkhite and Mike Moore, as well as Timekeeper’s Tony Bonner and Rocket Zach!
While this game concludes the playoffs and the season, we hope everyone can come out to the banquet which will take place at Dolan’s Pub on Saturday May 2nd from 6-9 pm. We are looking to get a rough headcount of those planning to attend, please let your Captains know so we can get an accurate count for banquet setup.
