The Annual Spring Classic was held in Saint John over the May1-3 weekend and featured teams from across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P.E.I.
Freddy Ball Hockey players dominated the lineup for the championship winning “ BHF” team, which also featured outstanding goaltender Matt Hunter and UNB MVP Cody Morgan, winning every single game played.
BHF roared out of the gates, going 3-0 although not without adversity. Sloan Smallman played through a bad wrist injury, Matt Astle was playing with a broken big toe (!!!) and Pascal battled through a knee injury compliments of an opposing goalie’s slash/attempted murder.
In play BHF ended up playing another undefeated team in the form of a Moncton squad. BHF, down 3-2 late in the game, pulled goalie Matt Hunter and Cody Morgan was able to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining. In the shootout Hunter stopped all three shooters while Pat Daley was able to sneak what proved to be the winner and preserved BHF’s perfect record in a squeaker.
With the perfect record BHF earned a direct flight to the Finals. The same Moncton squad played a speedy host city team to earn the right to Grudge Match in the Finals.
The drama in the Finals was not as biting. Led by superb trio of Sloan, Luke and Andrew BHF ran up a 10-3 spanking on Moncton, wresting the championship from their cold, dead, hands.
