History: Top Scorers and Milestones

History/Top Scorers/Milestones

So I’m sitting around thinking about ball hockey. Thinking over the season and looking at how things are shaping up, now that we’re down to seven weeks left. We had a tough game against Marc Guitard’s team, who seem to have our number.  As they now sit with a four point lead on top of the standings, it seems Magic Marker and his gang have a few team’s numbers.
As I thought over our tough opponent, I remembered Marc asking me if I could figure out how many points he has in the league.  He thought he might be close to 1000 points.  I had explained to him that it was tough, as a lot of the stuff is spread around and I don’t have some of the season’s final stats. I’d have to go in old school, and do it by hand so to speak.  Anyway, on this particular night, my curiosity got the best of me and I started doing a quick overview to get a close estimate.  My curiosity was increased when the estimate turned out too close to call, so I had to dig in and find out.  It was close enough that Marc may have already scored 1000 points by now.  I did have to dig a bit but it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought.  I found records of most of the seasons and only had to resort to the old fashioned way, going through the sheets, for one season.  I at least had half of it.
So after listing the seasons Marc played with his stats, it turns out he hasn’t hit the 1000 mark (no pun intended) yet, but he’s very close.  Going into this week he needs 17 points and currently sits at 983.  He should be the 6th player in league history to score 1000 points but it turns out Yvon Mayer is a bit closer to 1000, as he only needs 14 points but Marc scores at a higher pace.  Marc will also be the fastest player to score 1000 points.  The other five players all played in our first season.  Of course this opened a great big can of worms so to speak.  I realized I didn’t know how many points I had.  So I ended up digging lots and tracking down the league’s regular season top ten all time scorers. Considering who sits in first place, I can’t believe I took this long to figure it out.
Dennis Moffitt was the first player to reach 1000 points which he did midway through our 8th season.  He was followed by Jim Taylor, then Rick Bartlett who both scored their 1000th point late during the 8th season.  Troy Doyle was next, joining the club during week four of our 9th season.  There were a few candidates to be next to 1000 points but they were all still well over a season or two away.  So I wasn’t sure who would manage through the pack next.  I thought, maybe Marc.  As it turned out, Mike Moore had become the 5th player to score 1000 points earlier this season.  Now Marc and Yvon are poised to become the 6th and 7th players to 1000 points.
A couple of other observations.  Mike Moore went ahead of Jim Taylor late last season to become the league’s top regular season goal scorer.  This season Mike became the first player to score 600 goals. Marc Guitard earlier this season became the fourth player to score 500 goals.  Yvon leads all players with the most games played.  During 10 1/2 plus seasons, he has only missed 7 games in total.  He has only missed one game in the last 519.
